The International Orality Network has issued a call to missions-minded
Christians to explore ways to be more effective in communicating with secondary oral learners-in reaching them
for Christ, helping them grow and mobilizing them to involvement in ministry.
Secondary oral learners are "people who have become literate because of their job or schooling, but prefer
to be entertained, learn and communicate by oral means." These are the people that secondary orality is
seeking to reach.
Why is it important to do this? A 2004 study reported that "literary reading in America is not only declining
rapidly among all groups, but the rate of decline has accelerated, especially among the young." This reflects a
"massive shift toward electronic media for entertainment and information." Numerous western societies are
seeing similar shifts toward electronic media and the accompanying secondary orality.
It is with this background in mind that we seek to explore ways in which take people through this progression:
- Connect with a variety of ideas as awareness is created and needs are surfaced.
- Select great ideas that have the potential to work in specific setings.
- Implement selected ideas in specific settings with a way to monitor and measure progress towards
a goal.
This Web site is designed to be a tool to help in this process of moving through these steps.
Thanks for taken a moment to stop by.
