Conference Overview
Our plenary sessions introduce the primary concepts as well as provide motivation and vision-casting related to the foundational aspects of the ION movement. Our morning devotionals will use a storying model to guide us through a Scripture passage. Plenary speakers are leaders from within the ION movement.
Beyond these plenary sessions, our four day event will feature these elements.
Monday Afternoon – Introduction to Orality and Practitioners Summit: Beginning at 2pm, we will offer two sessions. The Introduction to Orality is designed for those who are new to Orality. Basic content will be provided that will help form a base of understanding. The Practitioners Summit gives an opportunity for those who offer orality services and materials to discuss ways to enhance the use of oral strategies.
The Morning Sessions – Elective Seminars: In the mornings (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) we will provide elective seminars from which attendees can choose those that match their interest. Each seminar will be identified within a track so that attendees can select a course load to give them the content most appropriate to their goals.
Our current "interest" groups are:
- Children: Many of the adult concepts can be adjusted and carried over to a youth audience.
- Church and Small Groups: For those who wish to use stories, visual media, and other oral methods in an evangelistic or church planting context.
- Music and Arts: For those wanting to learn how to integrate the use of music, poetry and arts into their existing oral strategies.
- Starter Track: This foundational track will have you storying, addressing real-life worldview issues, and crafting story sets for the people groups among whom you work.
- Training: How to teach others to use storying and research in a field context. This is more advanced than a starter track.
- Visual Story Network: This track is for those who wish to expand the use of visual stories with both the primary and secondary audiences.
- Women: This track will focus on the use of oral strategies with women.
Tuesday Afternoon – Orality Training Training: It is not a typo (i.e. training training), we are going to offer training on how to do orality training. These sessions are designed for teaching you how to go back to your church, ministry or organization with a plan for how to conduct basic orality training.
Tuesday Evening – Orality Training Demonstrations: We are going to local churches in the northwest Atlanta area to conduct orality overview and training sessions. It will be an opportunity to see demonstrations of the principles that were presented in the afternoon sessions.
Wednesday Afternoon – Task Force Meetings: The ION Task Forces carry on the work of the network thoughout the year. You will be introduced to the task forces and then given an opportunity to choose one that best lines up with your interest. The focus is summarizing what has been done, asking what needs to be done and then developing an action plan for the coming year. This time is used to both wrap up activities from the previous year and to recruit others into the task force for the next year. Task Forces meet throughout the year via phone.
